What is Pica?
Pica is the term used to refer to mouthing or eating of nonfood items. There are different reasons why a child may engage in this behavior. One of the most common causes is that the child is seeking increased sensory input as placing nonfood items into the mouth can provide strong tactile and proprioceptive input. A sensory diet can be implemented to help reduce this behavior. Often this is implemented alongside a behavioral approach.
